Run out of time? No way, it's time to Run a Marathon!
My wonderful 17 yr old daughter Samantha called (note: not text, Facebook, Twitter) yesterday to propose we run the NY City Marathon next Fall to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of surviving my heart attack. It will be 24 years since i last ran it- and ran it slow- and it will be Sam's first Marathan or anything close. But she's a terrific athlete and if i hold her hand tight enough somehow we will get to the finish line together. There is also a chance i can get my son Matt who will be 21 come Nov. to run it too (i'm allowed to dream big) and given he's in really great shape my fall back position is he can carry me once we get around 10 miles from Central Park.
Never in a zillion years could i have imagined in 1985 i would be running my next NY City Marathaon with my two yet to be thought of kids- at that point both seniors, one High School, the other College 24 years later. That said, in way more than a zillion years could i have ever imagined 10 years and one month earlier that i would be running a Marathon- at least not in this world- and not with my then 11 and year and 7 year old kids.
Whoever thinks we live in impossible times, we live in a time where everything is possible. I'm the beneficiary of a miracle, but so are most people in their own special, personal way. But come this Fall, i'm going to be a Marathon Man again side by side with my kids and my wonderful wife cheering all of us on...and having 911 on speed dial for the entire 26 miles, 385 yards!
Stay tuned, we'll be raising money for the American Heart Ass. and the best cardio-vascular team of surgeons and nurses at Westchester Medical Center!
